Why Atheists Aren't Afraid to Die
Not a bad article on death and atheism. I liked this line:
"That is what believers don't understand. Atheists tend to believe that life ends here; there is nothing beyond. Because there is nothing beyond life, there is nothing to fear. I don't fear because I don't believe."
That is it, believing gives you fear of death, not comfort.

That is my credo, I wasnt afraid to die in vietnam, not afraid now. I was nowhere before I was born.(at least I dont remember), and thats where I will go when my life is over on this planet. Thats not my belief, its a fact.

Exactly. I always found it odd that religious friends and family that I know seem to be much more concerned about dying than I am. They must all realize that no matter what they do, there's always a chance that hell awaits. =)

Death is the beginning of something very very very long lasting for the believer.
Death is the end of something that was way too short for the realist.

It may not always seem so short. I knew a few people in their 90s that were not complaining about the short time they were here but that they were reflecting on the great happy long lives they had in their last days. Maybe if one gets to be really old, one is not sorry anymore to go.

That's the way I view death, too, but if I tell people that, they think I'm lying. And I say I do not believe there is anything after death, I get responses like "But there HAS to be something!" That already tells me they actually know they are bullshitting themselves.

IDK, I think everyone fears death to an extent. No one wants to die. It's even been suggested that even those who commit suicide don't really want to die. Rather, they want a better life, which, for whatever reason, seems to be out of reach.
I think it is more on target to say that atheists simply do not fear eternal damnation after death.

I agree with Neal: I fear pain and disease, and of course I'm sure the actual moment when I realize I'm dying, I may feel fear; evolution ensured we cling to life, even animals with no knowledge of death still have an innate fear of dying.

You know, I already have 2 cancers, no pain yet, but if it comes, let it, science has produced some wonderful pain medication, so I dont fear that either.

TC, you are my hero and part of the memory of your straight up disposition on this subject will surely live on in the lives of people that know you. In that sense, I feel we never completely die. And fuck cancer!
