Birthdays

Birthdays Today

Birthdays Tomorrow

Well nobody is perfect and thank GOD for that because life would be very boring...

I used the word God intentionally just to show that it didn't mean anything relating to God... Now I am not only referring to Dawkins who doesn't seem to be allowed a slip of the tongue and saying "Oh God" as an expression as maybe looking for something on the tip of his mind...

There is not only God which is used very often in common language either as a kind of "swear" word or just as an expression, but Hell, Damn, Christ, Jesus; and, I'm pretty sure I can find others...

No one can stop language from evolving or eliminate religious based words (that exist in a lot of languages) that now have lost their religious connotations and are used now either as expressions or as "swear" words.

And also, religious based words crop up in other circumstances; just think about "soul" music which has nothing to do with the soul...  One couldn't say that about gospel music... !!!

Language evolves all the time and words that had strong religious connotations now are only used as "swear" words, or words with no particular importance except for some more purist people.

There could be a lenghty discussion on supposedly inappropriate words or "swear" words, and lots of them have nothing to do with religion, and their differences in different languages or countries (U.K. and the U.S. for example).  There are so many of them and so many differences where they originate from and where the specific places we find them in each cases...

I hope it is OK for an atheist to use those words totally out of their religious significance, just to express annoyance or something else ?

I do not see why not!

Many people make a big deal about idiomatic expressions with a religious content. The religious, because they are many times offended by these religiously oriented curses (like one of my favorite in Spanish: "me cago en Dios", or in English, when people say thinks like "Jesus Fucking Christ." And some atheists also get "offended" because they feel that we should abandon all references to religion. I've seen even silly discussions online about what an atheist should say when having an orgasm, given that they should not say "oh god." In reality, it's exactly as you say, Marianne, nobody should care too much about these expressions, except for the purist, the immature or the super-religious.

thanks for being of the same mind as me (I had thought of writing about this before Dawkins made his "allegedly" mistake....

Did we have a discussion on swear words (especially of religious origins) on A World of Words of was this discussion at some other site. It was fun. Let me look around.

Must have been on another site...:-(

The subject is worth revisiting.

Let's play a game. Since we have members of several native tongues here, please list your favorite swear words of religious origin in this discussion, with approximate English translations.

I'm going to start by stealing Michel and Marianne's thunder with the best religion-inspired Quebecois swear word: "Tabernacle!" I leave the translation up to them :-)

Here is my favorite curse from Spanish, directly from Spain actually: "me cago en la Hostia" (I shit on the holy host), which gets shortened to "Hostia!" or "Hostias!" most frequently.

And my favorites from Italian: "Gesù cane!" (Jesus dog!) and "Madonna porca" (the virgin is a pig, or alternatively, a whore).

Me and Marc thought about the swear words in Quebec and quickly realized that most of them are religion related...  Here are some, and some that all go together in a 3 or 4 expression with approximate translation, how it would be written as a swear word and how it would be written properly:

Mon Dieu: My God

Kriss: Christ : Christ

Sacrament: sacrement: sacrament

ostie, sti : hostie: host

tabarnac: tabernacle: tabernacle

Câlisse: calice: chalice

ciboire: ciboire: ciborium

enfer: hell

viarge: vierge: virgin

simonaque ?

torieux ? (to do with dieu ?)

crucifix: crucifix

baptême: baptism

tabarouette: form of tabernacle but milder

calvaire: martyrdom

maudit: damned

damné: damned

mosus: maudit: damned (mild)

Saint-ciboire: holy ciborium

crif de câlife :christ of chalice (mild form)

criss de câlisse: christ of chalice

décâlisser: chalice away: go away

décrisser: christ away : idem

esti de malade: hostie de malade: you're crazy (esti is for host)

criss de débile: christ of débile: you're crazy

lâche moi dont la sainte paix: leave me in peace:  sainte: holy

tabarnac de saint-ciboire: tabernacle of holy ciborium

krisser une voler : give (christ er) a beating

sainte horreur: holy horror (mild)

câlisse de tabernac; chalice of tabernacle

kriss d'innocent: kriss: Christ: stupid fool

kriss de fou: mad man

osti d'enragé: osti: host: crazy dangerous man

esprit: spirit

câline: from chalice but mild

tabarouette: from tabernacle (mild)

câline de bine: chalice of bean (approximatively...)

and for the end:...

orgie de tabarnac de saint-ciboire: tabernacle of Holy ciborium orgy !!!!!

What a fantastic list! It says a lot about the irreverence of the Quebecois. I love it. From now on, when I'm really angry, I will always say " orgie de tabarnac de saint-ciboire!" :-))

I think it might sound somewhat funny except for Quebecois who'll wonder where you got such a swear word !!!!!!!

I will let them know I got it from you, hahaha! ;-))

We also use Fuck, a lot, often in the form fucké(e), adj. Yé pas mal fucké - he's pretty fucked-up.

Fuck! - ouch! It is interchangeable with Shit! also used often.

Fuck de marde! - fucking shit!

Fuck de Christ! - that's when religious swearwords are not enough.

Perhaps more often in Montreal than in Quebec City?
