NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim May 3, 2012, as a National Day of Prayer. I invite all citizens of our Nation, as their own faith directs them, to join me in giving thanks for the many blessings we enjoy, and I call upon individuals of all faiths to pray for guidance, grace, and protection for our great Nation as we address the challenges of our time.
The full proclamation is HERE
What a massive load of crap!
If guidance is to come from that mushy part of the brain where fiction is concocted, the odds of getting grace and protection in the deal are pretttty slim. Reliance on this crap shouldn't reassure anybody, au contraire!
On the upside, it will keep believers distracted from the real issues - stuff like the government's inadequacy to even acknowledge, let alone do something about, the looming global perils.
There is this very thoughtful rebuke from - of all places - Rabbi Shalom, a blogger for Humanistic Judaism. He writes:
Don’t Just Pray – Choose to ACT!!
If prayer is a form of meditation, a way of expressing one’s deepest hopes and wishes, an experience of self-centering, all well and good. But expecting that our desires can transform the world without our effort to realize them is neither practical nor realistic nor helpful.
He then goes on and serves this brilliant quote from George Carlin:
The Divine Plan. Long time ago, God made a Divine Plan. Gave it a lot of thought, decided it was a good plan, put it into practice. And for billions and billions of years, the Divine Plan has been doing just fine. Now, you come along, and pray for something. Well suppose the thing you want isn't in God’s Divine Plan? What do you want Him to do? Change His plan? Just for you? Doesn't it seem a little arrogant? It’s a Divine Plan. . . .
And here’s something else, another problem you might have: Suppose your prayers aren't answered. What do you say? “Well, it’s God’s will.” “Thy Will Be Done.” Fine, but if it’s God’s will, and He’s going to do what He wants to anyway, why … bother praying in the first place? Seems like a big waste of time to me! Couldn't you just skip the praying part and go right to His Will? It’s all very confusing.
A National Day of Reason was counter-proposed by some, but Rabbi Shalom would prefer a national call to action. In any case, seeing governments endorse superstition as a management tool is very scary in at least two ways: they are intent on keeping us clueless and on hiding how helpless they are to cope.
My proposal: just drop the idea. The concept of a National Day of anything is so that people engage together in a given activity - in this case it would be a National Day of Not Doing Anything?
Plus, don't they already have a Weekly Day of Prayer???
Is there a reason for this unreason? A day of reason sounds like a good idea to me.
Bless, we implore you, O Lord, our nation and people. Defend our liberties and make us faithful citizens of our land. Give wisdom and courage to those who govern us: Elizabeth our Queen, David our Governor General, Stephen our Prime Minister, and ________ our Premier, that they do so with honesty, humility, justice, and diligence, so that we may lead quiet and peaceable lives in all godliness. Lord, in your mercy,
- OR -
O almighty God, you have ordained civil government that it should serve you and your redeemed people in righteousness and honour. We pray for our leaders: Elizabeth our Queen, Adrienne our Governor General, Paul our Prime Minister, ________ our Premier, ________ our Mayor, and all legislators and judges. Grant that they may put accountability to you ahead of self-interest and personal gain and thus fulfill the role you have permitted them to assume. Bless our land with honest industry, truthful education, and an honourable way of life. Save us from violence, discord, and confusion, from pride and arrogance, and from every evil course of action. When times are prosperous, let our hearts be thankful, and in troubled times do not let our trust in you fail. Bring about among us repentant hearts and may the power and peace offered in the cross of Christ be made known throughout our land; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
I love this quote !
If there is such thing as a divine plan put out by this so called god then what is the point of prayer? If the plan is already set in motion then prayer would do jack to change it. Plus is does say in the Bible that God creates all evil put onto this world.
It's all in God's plan + free will ?!?
<DOES NOT COMPUTE>
Was he coerced into declaring this ??????
Michel, you know I thought this was a joke. We have a day of prayer and for the last five years it has not brought any results. The pastors talk of repentance, the government talks of changing things then after that they both go back to their stealing ways, pastors defrauding their congregants with the promise of heaven, the government lying to us that our taxes are being put to good use.
I like the Rabbi, if he continues that way he may just become an atheist.
In a way, you are right. It is a joke.
A National Day of Magical Thinking - let's celebrate our inability to act for real, let's highlight our reliance on superstition, let everyone know we have no clue...
What the government is actually saying is look here guys, we are as clueless and helpless as you guys but we will keep drawing a salary from your hard work! It is crazy what people believe and do.
The way Obama's been talking about Evil lately I've concluded that actually believes there is an Evil force (ie. the devil) that he is batteling. Obama's all for prayer to call on God to help him battle his imaginary Evil enemy that's causing all the problems in the world and this country such as that that took place at Sandy Hook elementary school. According to him Evil did that... not the shooter.
"Evil" is something you can pray away.
Makes evil "convenient".
Today, May 2, is the National Day of Prayer in the United States, a day when we come together as Americans to pray for our country.
From the Boston bombing, the Sandy Hook elementary school massacre, the theater shooting in Aurora, and dozens of other disturbing acts of Godless cowards, we’re constantly reminded how badly America needs our prayers—not just today, but every day.
So today, I’d like to ask you to join me in praying to heal our nation, and to ask for God’s grace in the year ahead.
And while we pray for the future of our nation, it’s important to remember that it’s up to us to make sure our children are learning about God’s role in America and our history.
