Permalink Reply by Victor Rubicon on April 10, 2012 at 6:11pm Thanks, Adriana, for approving my registration. And, congratulation on AU.
I was born into a working-class family of Roman Catholic, second-generation Italians and Irish, in the late 1950's in New York. A relative of mine was the bookkeeper for the local church and bingo game. One of my aunts was in the convent to become a nun but became pregnant instead. This was not uncommon but was not at all acceptable. This event was one of my epiphanies; I needed several before becoming an atheist.
Today, disguised as a mild-mannered editor for a great metropolitan newspaper, I live a life of quiet but militant atheism, less antagonistic toward theists than ever but no less forgiving of magical thinking.

Permalink Reply by Adriana on April 11, 2012 at 7:20am Welcome Victor! I may even read the paper you work for :-) I was also born from a working class Catholic (nominally) family, I even went to Catholic school but I had doubts as far as I can remember even as a young child.
I think you will like it here! Looking forward to your contributions.

Permalink Reply by Craig 396 on April 22, 2012 at 1:09am Im an Aussie that had no religion forced as a child, with this freedom to think I have grown to adult with an open and guilt free view on any issue. Through a clear lens events happeneing around the globe make no sense nor the roles most religions claiming to be there to assist. As a child i watched on TV children were starving, people being killed through war, homeless and violence going on all over the world. I'm now 43 and nothing has changed which proves a major point to me, it's not working. The vatican has enough wealth to cure all the problems over the planet, why doesnt it help? Our planet is ruled by a cruel power with it's own very dark agenda, how this type of rule is benificial is lost with me. Why any group believe the control factor has to be employed like this just confirmes the madness gripping the shadow elites. All the evidece over Earth telling us our true origins being ignored, A high % of the population either too stupid, blinded by religion or celebrity focused on brands or the false belief of what constitutes success has no future. I hope this allows people to understand some of my views, in an attempt to introduce myself.

Permalink Reply by Michel on April 22, 2012 at 10:57am Yes, religion does more than just not help, it actually makes things a lot worse. It is fundamentally divisive.
Now I don't know about "shadow" elites. I don't think that in this day and age someone can remain hidden for very long. Moreover, I think humans are not bright enough and too self-centered to be that cohesive even among the ultra-very rich.
If they were, we wouldn't be allowed to exist, here at AU =)

Permalink Reply by Adriana on April 22, 2012 at 11:03am Welcome, Craig! IMHO, the shadow elites are not really in the shadows, most people admire the powerful, the rich, the elite. The only elite that people do not admire here in the US at least are the intellectuals and scientists, there is a strong current of anti-science and anti-intellectualism. There is no madness in the elites, they have figured out a way to control a certain sector of the people and in democracies, to make them vote against their own interest as it happens here in the US. And yes, for that type of control they use fear, and fear is the root of religious devotion.
I hope you like it here!

Permalink Reply by Michel on April 22, 2012 at 11:16am Yes, what won't you do for me if you actually believe in my promise of an afterlife?
Permalink Reply by David Tamayo on April 22, 2012 at 2:38pm Welcome Craig! Well, I would argue that religion is also self correcting because even when then someone tries to do the right thing, they'll bite their head off such as it's shown in the link below (I'm joking of course).
The pope reprimands nuns for doing TOO MUCH for the poor and needy and NOT ENOUGH against gays!! What a douche!! http://www.nytimes.com/2012/04/19/us/vatican-reprimands-us-nuns-gro...
