Did anyone ever read this  book?   How can  it be tips for raising Atheists?

How to raise your child, or yourself, an atheist

That is a discussion from Justin L. Barrett’s new and interesting Born Believers: The Science of Children’s Religious Belief.  He gives more than equal time to how to raise your child to be religious, but we’re already pretty good at that.  Here are his atheism tips, noting that I am excerpting and paraphrasing:

1. Have less-than-average fluency in reasoning about minds.  Wow, only those who really understand the brain need a God?

2. Do not have children.  Okay, a little sarcastic here

3. Stay safe.    ???

4. Get in the habit of crediting or blaming humans for whatever you can.  Instead of making up a God to explain everything?

5. Learn to like pseudoagents (including abstractions).

6. Take time to reflect.  Okay, what is wrong with this?

7. Add to these factors indoctrination of the young against religion.  I have never indoctrinated children against religion - it is an non  topic.

The key theme of Barrett’s book is HADD — Hypersensitive Agency Detection Device, and how pronounced it is in most human beings.

Hyperactive Agency Detection

Something does not seem quite right. The most powerful man in the world, John F. Kennedy, was taken out by a lone nutjob of no previous consequence? A jet flies into the pentagon and yet the expected debris is not visible. And why can’t I see stars in the NASA Apollo moon landing photos?

Some hidden agent must be at work, conspiring to deceive and carry out some sinister plot.

At least that is how our brains are hardwired to think, and some of us more than others. This tendency has been termed the “hyperactive (or hypersensitive) agency detection device” -  HADD – coined by Justin Barrett. Understanding that HADD is an intrinsic part of human nature is part of the core knowledge base of the skeptic.

Under the sway of powerful internal and external influences, children understand their environments by imagining at least one creative and intelligent agent, a grand creator and controller that brings order and purpose to the world.

Not sure about that.
Order and purpose come out of the fog for fresh brains, they are not created.
